Vista to Pahrump

Wednesday morning - early - we drove from Vista to Pahrump. We were on the road at 6:30 am, trying to beat the traffic, but it didn't work. Traffic just crawled all the way along highway 215. When we got past that, we ran into thick fog. Great.
Eventually we headed out into the desert on highway 15.  I wonder how you pronounce this road?
Along the way we drove by something called Devils' Playground, at the edge of Mojave National Park. It's perfectly flat so it doesn't photograph well from the road, but it looks like it earned it's name. As we drove through this area, we dropped to 400 ft above sea level and the temperature rose to 91 degrees.
Along this road is the real desert; if you went hiking, you could die here. And there are no services. Get gas and use the bathroom before you leave Baker!
The desert continues all the way to Pahrump but as you get closer to Nevada, some beautiful mountain break up the horizon. Since we were at a slightly higher elevation, the temp dropped back to a more comfortable 83 degrees.
By this time Shorty was ready to die....of boredom. "PLEASE can this trip be over?"
We pulled into Pahrump around 12:30 - not bad for all the traffic and fog!
